Letter to the Editor: March 28

Wow! I’m quite enthusiastic over the increased coverage of the Undergraduate Student Government displayed in the past week.

It’s so good to know what our government is up to. The front page, multi-section articles being published this week concerning some achievement or resolution of a longstanding policy plank or problem showed this.

I’ve enjoyed the consistent policy analysis and the directness of the interviews, providing the current administration ample opportunity to speak to the press, providing students with a coherent and direct link to their administration.

In the vein of honesty and forthrightness in journalistic ethics, I do wish that there could have seen more significant reporting in the past few months concerning the current administration (or student politics in general) about efforts by different clubs or organizations.

For instance, search queries of statepress.com for “Mounlavongsy” and “Goulding” (accepting that VP of Policy Michael Wong’s absence this week would make it difficult for him to be reached for comment) demonstrate more articles having been written about the current administration in the past week than in the entire semester!

Someone or something must’ve lit the fire under the feet of The State Press to engender such emphatic and consistent reporting this week as opposed to the other semester and a half of the administration!

If only we could figure out what this reason is, so we might light this fire of positive reporting and accountability more often and in a more consistent manner. Then, maybe, we would be able to positively engage students during times that weren’t so conspicuously well remembered!
