USG DROPPED THE BALL

As a former employee of and an avid advocate for student government, I am incredibly disappointed by USG dropping the ball during this go around of appropriations.

The two major a cappella groups on campus, Priority Male and Pitchforks, are traveling to Los Angeles this weekend to compete against the very best in collegiate a cappella from all over the West Coast.

We were relying on USG appropriations, as we are clubs, to help pay for this expensive yet excellent opportunity to showcase ASU and raise our University's profile.

Lo and behold, appropriations have been postponed until the day we are leaving, and both groups were told by USG that there is nothing that can be done to remedy this unfortunate circumstance. We are left out in the cold.

Not only is this an example of student government failing miserably to do its job of funding clubs, it also is a case of USG failing to really follow through on its goal to improve school spirit and ASU pride.

As anyone from the traditional, school-spirit filled institutions from back East and in the Midwest will tell you, glee clubs and a cappella groups form an integral part in the school-spirit community. They sing the alma mater and fight song at games; they sing around the community as goodwill ambassadors for the college.

This (now self-funded) trip to Los Angeles is an awesome opportunity for two of the best things ASU has to offer to show the rest of the West Coast how awesome ASU really is. Unfortunately, we will be doing it on a shoestring, college-student budget instead of with the support of our student government.
