WHERE DID ALL THE BOOKS GO?
What horrible cataclysm befell Hayden library over the course of spring break? Some dozens of bookshelves have been removed, as have many of the comfortable chairs used for reading, snoozing and working on laptops.
What we are left with is a new and bulky bit of furniture covered with cubbies, at which students can sit in straight-backed chairs and work with computers they brought from home.
As the library associated exclusively with the arts, Hayden should not be replacing bookshelves with empty space, or cozy seats with computer cubbies, in the middle of the semester.
Those who utilize this space are primarily English or History majors and, I daresay, prefer a comfy chair and a stack of books over an empty room and a laptop.
If this is why tuition keeps increasing, ASU can feel free to keep their progress next semester, and leave us dinosaurs in peace, rather than poverty.
In the meantime, perhaps Noble could use these computer cubbies …

SAFETY OVER HUMILIATION?
(In reference to Athena Salman’s March 21 column, “Illusion of safety.”)
So now the airlines are maybe a tiny bit safer, but the determined terrorists have moved on to “softer” targets, like Times Square, Christmas tree lighting ceremonies and cargo bombs.
Next attack — shopping centers, schools, cruise ships, sports events, subways, tunnels, buses, airport security lines to name but a few.
We cannot possibly catch every attempt by screening, but we can humiliate millions of people and help bankrupt already hurting commercial aviation companies.
We can certainly give more people cancer than terrorists are likely to kill.
Fire 25,000 TSA clerks, dump the scanners and pat-downs, bring in dogs, and give the saved money to the FBI & CIA, who can actually catch terrorists.
