Suspicious package report halts light rail service

Light rail trains were evacuated at the Center Parkway and Washington Street stop Sunday night after police received reports of a suspicious package on a train.

All rail traffic across the Mill Avenue bridge was redirected at 7:10 p.m. and passengers were given the option to ride a bus to other light rail stops.

Tempe Police had K-9 units searching the train to determine if the report was a hoax or an actual threat, Tempe Police spokeswoman Molly Enright said.

Enright said there was nothing to indicate a threat, but police wanted to make sure the train was safe before passengers were allowed back on. Metro Light Rail said on Twitter that the incident was cleared shortly after 8:30 p.m.
