Tempe fatal collisions increase in 2010

Traffic collisions overall decreased in Tempe in 2010, although fatal collisions increased, according to a Tempe Police Department report.

Overall traffic collisions in Tempe in 2010 went down 3.9 percent from 2009, while fatal collisions went up with nine occurring in 2010 compared to seven in 2009, according to the report.

An analysis of the fatal collisions in 2010 showed the majority was caused by vehicles exceeding the speed limit. The most common type of fatal collision was between vehicles and bicycles, and the age group most associated with fatal collisions was 21 to 25 years old, police reported.

Last year also showed an increase in the number of fatal collisions involving impaired persons, with 44 percent of the collisions involving impaired drivers, up from 28 percent in 2009, according to the report.

All of the fatal accidents that occurred in 2010 were solved by Tempe Police Vehicular Crimes Unit investigators, police reported.
