Tempe Police works to reduce collisions

A week after releasing statistics that showed an increase in fatal collisions in Tempe, the Tempe Police Department announced it will increase enforcement to reduce collisions in the city.

Tempe Police will work with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety during the campaign, which begins Monday and ends Sunday.

Traffic enforcement officers will be patrolling the top 10 collision locations in Tempe with the goal of reducing traffic incidents, Tempe Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Carbajal said in an e-mail.

“We have seen that high visibility enforcement can enhance safety for the motoring public and prevent crime in the surrounding areas,” he said.

The intersection of Rural Road and University Drive had the most reported collisions, with 60 in the last six months.

Following close behind, Rural Road and Southern Avenue reached 54 collisions in the last six months, and 5000 South Arizona Mills Circle had 47 collisions, according to Tempe Police.

Tempe had nine fatal collisions in 2010, up from seven the year before. Overall collisions, however, were down 3.9 percent from 2009, according to a report from Tempe Police.
