Tempe power outage affects campus buildings

At least three buildings on the Tempe campus lost power Monday morning due to a burned power line connection near University Avenue and Eighth Street.

Damon Gross, spokesman for the Arizona Public Services Co., said about 1,900 customers in Tempe lost power at around 8 a.m.

The outage stretched about one-square mile from University Avenue to Broadway Road and from Mill Avenue to Dorsey Lane.

The University sent out a tweet saying that the southeast quadrant of the Tempe campus had lost power. The facilities affected included the University Services building, the Sonora Center and the South Central Plant.

The nearby Vista Del Sol apartments were not affected, according to apartment employees.

University officials could not immediately comment on the outage.

APS crews worked to fix the problem, Gross said, and the power was restored for most customers by 9:35 a.m., including the Tempe campus buildings.

The cause of the burned connection is still unclear, Gross said.
