ASU Police investigate 3 possible arson cases

ASU Police are actively investigating three arson fires that occurred on the Tempe campus this week.

ASU Police spokesman Cmdr. Jim Hardina could not confirm if the cases are related and said the department is still investigating them.

The first two fires happened Saturday morning within minutes of each other.

At approximately 2:12 a.m., an unknown person or persons set fire to the cover of a parking lot meter in Lot 13, causing an undetermined amount of damage, according to a police report.

Approximately six minutes later, an unknown person or persons set fire to the Phoenix New Times stand at the intersection of Forest Mall and Orange Mall, according to a police report.

There was no damage done to the stand and only the magazines inside were harmed, police reported.

At about 3:52 a.m. Monday, an unknown person or persons set fire to the contents of a trash can just outside the ASU Police Station on the 300 block of East Apache Boulevard causing $75 worth of damage, according to a police report.

There are no leads or witnesses for the first two fires, according to the reports.

Three men were seen fleeing the area of the crime on Monday, according to the police report.
