The Baltimore Orioles are in first place.

Yes, the Orioles actually have more wins than the Yankees and Red Sox.

It’s hard to believe considering Baltimore hasn’t posted a winning season since 1997.

Of course, it’s still the first week of the regular season, and there’s plenty of baseball left.

However, the Orioles’ hot start can’t be overlooked.

Second-year skipper Buck Showalter jumpstarted his team when he took over last summer. So far, it’s been more of the same in 2011.

It’s hard not to root for a team that has been stomped on by the Yankees, Red Sox and nearly all of Major League baseball for the last 13 seasons.

The AL East figures to be one of the most competitive divisions in all of baseball, yet the Orioles boast more than enough talent.

With an abundance of talented pitching, and with a lineup that includes Brian Roberts, Vlad Guerrero and Nick Markakis, the Orioles are capable of challenging the powerful Yankees.

Starting pitchers may make or break this young club, but so far it’s been quite impressive.

Jake Arrieta, Jeremy Guthrie, Chris Tillman and Zach Britton are four of baseball’s best young arms.

At last, one of baseball’s most storied franchises is back on the rise.
