Letters to the Editor: April 18

ALL HYPE AND NO GOLD

(In response to Andrew Gruman’s April 13 article “ASU athletics unveils new uniforms.”)

The University’s colors are maroon and gold. There is a lot of emphasis on Sun Devil gold at sporting and other events.

That field of gold makes a big impact in the stands. The image is sunny and bright — brilliant even. Maybe dazzling. ASU as dark and malevolent? I don’t think so.

Black helmets and uniforms in the desert — really? I don’t think much of students who pick their school because the uniforms are all black.

Are you telling me the football team can’t make gold a cool color? I am so disappointed.

Let’s call the sudden rebranding of ASU’s sports logo and uniforms exactly what it is: An act of desperation by University administrators desperate for success.

The change from ASU’s iconic Sparky mascot to a new Nike-created pitchfork as the school’s primary logo is a radical break from tradition, and will take a great deal of time for many people to fully digest.

THE CASE FOR GUNS ON CAMPUS

(In response to Oonagh McQuarrie’s April 11 column, “Lunacy has prevailed.”)

First off, I need to point out that you’re making a completely unnecessary straw-man argument by constructing a profile of the average student.

Second, just because a campus chooses to ban firearms on campus doesn’t magically deter someone who is intent on committing a crime from coming on campus.

In reality, students who are staying in dorms are, due to the extant restrictions, far more vulnerable to having crimes committed against them because they, according to criminal logic, are soft targets.
