Crews are working to restore power to the Tempe campus after a rodent in a nearby substation cut off electricity to the area.
The power went out shortly before 11:20 a.m. Monday, affecting the west side of the Tempe campus. APS crews began working to repair the substation around 1 p.m.
An APS employee said power could be restored between 3 and 4 p.m. Crews are currently waiting to receive a piece of equipment that would help them repair the damaged power substation.
Buildings west of Life Sciences E Wing were without power, including the Memorial Union and Hayden Library. Wireless Internet service was also down in this area.
Buildings and Wi-Fi on the east side of campus were unaffected, including Computing Commons and the Student Recreation Complex.
Some classes were canceled Monday, while others continued as normal or moved outside. The University recommened contacting professors to find out whether specific classes are canceled.
ASU spokeswoman Julie Newberg said the power outages did not extend off campus and there was no estimate available on when power could be restored.
Buildings that require electricity for certain essential services, such as refrigeration for science labs, are equipped with backup power generators that appeared to be functioning adequately.
The rodent did not survive.
[Editor's note: An APS official initially identified the carcass as a mouse but later said it could be a rat.]
