When it comes to the shot put, the ASU men’s track team has the market cornered.
For the third straight year, the Sun Devils brought home the NCAA title in the shot put. This time, however, it was a new face holding the medal aloft.
Sophomore Jordan Clarke had two throws that were good enough for his first-ever national title. The winning mark was 19.53 meters, but Clarke went on to hit a mark of 19.75 meters, enough to keep first place.
The last two seasons Ryan Whiting won the shot put title for the Sun Devils in 2009 and 2010, and still owns the school record for the event.
Clarke has now garnered All-American honors three times in the event.
On the women’s side, the Sun Devils gained a pair of All-Americans in seniors Jasmine Chaney and Samantha Henderson.
Chaney finished fourth in the women’s 400-meter hurdles for the second year in a row to grab All-American first team honors.
Henderson finished ninth in the Heptathlon, high enough to make the All-American second team. It is her first time being named an All-American.
On the team side, Texas A&M swept the national titles, with both the men’s and women’s teams bringing home the trophies. The ASU women finished 19th overall, while the men ended up tied for 25th overall with six other teams.
The Sun Devils will close out their season with the USA Track and Field Championships, which start on June 23.
