The Memorial Union will be changing its policies for the lower level lounge areas to only allow students, staff and accompanied guests whenever the building is open.

The change in policy was in part due to the number of non-students that have been in use of the lower level TV lounge area.

“The MU facilities are primarily for the use of ASU students, faculty and staff and our policies and practices are designed to help facilitate that use,” said Eliza Robinson, marketing specialist for the Memorial Union and University Housing.

Music education senior Sebastion Maconi recently said that when he used to go down to lower level lounge areas, there would be a number of non-students down in the area.

“They were in there every morning watching TV,” he said. “I was mostly irritated … the facilities down there are kind of limited as it is.”

How the changed policy will be enforced in not known, but Maconi said it “should be enforceable” if Memorial Union staff check the area regularly.

Samantha Hampton, a secondary education senior who works as a building manager for the MU, said that sometimes people who weren't students or staff who hung out in the lower level would make her feel uncomfortable when she was trying to lock up the building.

"Sometimes at night it would feel a little unsafe," she said.

Hampton also said the new policy will be "great."

"It's a good thing," she said. "It's not fair that students should have to feel unsafe there."

Signs noting the new policy will be placed throughout the lower level.

“The policy for the TV lounge sets expectations for use of that space,” Robinson said. “We take pride in the fact that the MU is considered the campus community center and we will continue to meet the needs of the community throughout all of its venues.”
