ASU Police reported the following incident Friday:
- A 21-year-old Tempe man was arrested in the early morning on Aug. 11 for suspicion of breaking into a vending machine and stealing candy bars near wing H of the Physical Science building and for outstanding warrants, police reported.
The suspect was spotted by a witness on campus and described him as a white male in black clothing with a backpack while riding a bike, according to a police report.
ASU Police were notified that the suspect was still in the area of the Physical Science building, police reported.
Two officers found and stopped the suspect, asking him for identification to which he replied that he did not have any. The suspect gave a name and said he was looking for his brother around campus because they were riding together but his brother was too fast for him, according to a report.
The officer noticed the suspect was nervous and rubbing his arms and hands together, police reported.
One officer told the suspect to put his hands up but the suspect only put them up halfway, and the officer again told him put his hands up when another officer noticed a cut on the suspect’s palm with dry blood, according to a report.
The suspect began to rub his wrist, where there was dry blood, when one officer asked him what was wrong and the suspect repeated that he wanted to find his brother, police reported.
The officers read the suspect his Miranda Rights and then the officers asked the man permission to look into his backpack to which he declined, according to a report.
One officer interviewed the witness who told the officer he heard a loud clash twice while walking eastbound on University Drive. The witness walked back to the where he heard the sound and spotted the suspect fleeing the vending machine, police reported.
One officer reported that the suspect had red and swollen knuckles with scratches on both of his arms, according to a report. The suspect allegedly stole a Milky Way and a Hershey’s bar and he was then confirmed to have an undisclosed outstanding warrant, which ASU police then arrested him for, police reported.
An officer conducted a search on the man’s backpack and discovered a large hammer with a white handle and pieces of glass, according to a report.
