Police Beat: Aug. 29

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Sunday:

  • A 23-year-old Mesa woman was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault of a police officer early Tuesday morning, according to a police report.

The woman contacted police about an incident involving a man with a knife, and she waved down a police officer at a parking lot on Broadway Road, police reported.

When police talked to her, she became “belligerent” and eventually threw a Blackberry at the officer’s chest, according to the report.

The officer subdued the woman in handcuffs and took her to Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment of injuries the suspect claims she acquired in April, according to the report.

Tempe Police reported transferring the woman to Tempe City Jail after the hospital visit.

Mesa Police confirmed that there was not an incident that occurred in regard to the woman’s allegations about a man with a knife, according to the report.

  • A 26-year-old Tempe man was arrested early Sunday morning on suspicion of aggravated assault of a police officer with a firearm, according to a police report.

A Tempe Police officer responded to a 911 call about a verbal altercation, police reported.

Witnesses identified the man as having blonde hair and wearing a white shirt, and he was seen trespassing into a vacant house’s backyard, according to the report.

The officer heard whispering while investigating the vacant property and saw the man hiding behind trash and clutter, police reported.

After the officer told the man to reveal himself, the man jumped up from behind the clutter and pulled out a loaded .22-caliber semi-automatic pistol from his pocket and aimed it at the police officer, according to the report.

The officer began to draw his weapon and instructed the man to put down his weapon, police reported.

Before the officer could fully draw his firearm, the suspect threw his weapon down, according to the report.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident, transported and booked into jail, police reported.
