The Student Recreation Complex reopened Wednesday morning a week after flooding from a water pipe break closed down the facility.

Director of Campus Recreation Tamra Garstka said a hot water pipe that malfunctioned on the second floor caused the flooding. Repairs are still being made to the damaged areas.

The damaged portions of the second floor include much of the drywall, flooring and four of the 14 racquetball courts, Garstka said.

A facility manager opening the building on the morning of Aug. 10 first discovered the malfunction, she said. The employee heard a pop and saw water start to pour from the ceiling.

It is unclear when repairs will be fully completed, but most of the maintenance is being done during off hours to minimize disturbances to students.

The women’s locker room is still in need of repairs because of high moisture levels, Garstka said. The locker room is being “aired out.”

The women’s locker room is open for use but the showers in the locker room are closed to keep moisture levels down, Garstka said.

The cost of damages is unknown as repairs are ongoing, Garstka said.

Unrelated to the flood damage, the SRC sports fields will remain closed until Aug. 22 for scheduled maintenance.
