Bravo to the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law’s new Homeowner Advocacy Unit. This group helps people who have had their homes wrongfully foreclosed, and was started with a grant from the Arizona Attorney General’s office. It’s an essential public service, and those involved are fighting to protect everyday people who fall prey to mortgage lenders and banks. It is also great to see law school students using their education to give back to the community.
Boo to the vandalism and low funding that may stop Mill Avenue’s holiday lights from going up. Thanks to the defacing of Mill Avenue, this year’s holiday decorations might be a little sparse in the Downtown Tempe area. Nancy Hormann, president and executive director of Downtown Tempe Community, Inc., told The State Press it cost between $3,000 and $4,000 last year to maintain the lights because of vandalism. It might seem like fun to deface the lights while intoxicated, but it turns into a regret down the line.
Bravo to the money being raised for scholarships from the sale of redesigned alumni license plates. An astonishing amount, $250,000 to be exact, has been raised to date. All these purchases are helping send students to school, and it is a great example of alumni giving back to their community. The plates run for $25, and $17 of that money goes toward the Medallion Scholarship fund. Even in tough economic times, if we still work together to support our community, we can still accomplish great things.
Boo to the awkward start of college football. We were a little astonished that people started tailgating at 11 a.m. on a Thursday, but tradition is tradition. Apparently it doesn’t matter if it’s a workday or not; people will still show up and toss a football around several hours before the game starts. Not only that, but parking and traffic were horrendous, and they are already bad enough on a school day without a football game.
Bravo to a Sun Devils’ blowout victory on Thursday night. The college football opener fell on an odd day of the week, but the team lived to their hype and sent UC Davis home with a rough defeat. The debut of the new uniforms cannot go unnoticed either. The home team looked sharp as they moved the ball up and down the field. Quarterback Brock Osweiler and company gave us reason to believe that this season might be different.
