It’s big conference win against a team ASU hasn’t beaten since before I knew my times tables. Players celebrated, Dennis Erickson got a Powerade bath, and a team on the hot seat made a statement on national television. What’s missing?

The fans rushing the field.

By all accounts Saturday’s win over USC was the biggest win during Erickson’s tenure.  Yet it was met with students filing out of the stadium like citizens leaving the DMV.

Ted Miller, the Pac-12 blogger for ESPN.com, said, “When it was over, Arizona State (junior) quarterback Brock Osweiler didn’t have to fend off adoring fans or raise his voice as he conducted an on-camera interview...”

Miller expected fans to be on the field, but understood USC wasn’t at the height of its power.

What Miller didn’t see was the extraordinary security measures in place to prevent the students from partaking in one of the most exciting practices in college football.

While Sun Devils ponder why every other school is lenient with this process to the point of persuading the students to do so (especially when ESPN is in town,) it continues to be an unreachable fantasy here in Tempe.

UA fans rush the field about once a year, and while I’m not saying we should emulate our southern neighbors, it sure looks like fun.
