Network conflicts squash viewing party

A good tradition is generally supposed to have a positive start for good luck.

The ASU Sun Devil Club hoped to spark a new Sun Devil football tradition by announcing their inaugural Sun Devil Away Viewing Party, starting it on Saturday in time for ASU’s showdown at Illinois. The event was supposed to repeat for every away football game.

Unfortunately, due to strict network contracts, the Sun Devil Club was not granted permission to show the game to fans, leading to the cancellation of the first launch of its new tradition.

Just hours after the event was unveiled to the public, ASU Athletics issued a counter-statement last night on its Facebook fan page that the Sun Devil Away Viewing Party was canceled, due to confliction with the Fighting Illini’s contract under the Big Ten Network.

The event was supposed to take place in the UltraStar Scottsdale Pavilion and the game was to be broadcast in the facility’s largest theater. Among special guests that were scheduled to attend were Sun Devil greats Ron Pritchard and J.D. Hill.

The Sun Devil Club anticipated 600 fans to be in attendance. There is no word yet whether or not this will affect future Away Viewing Party events.
