Police beat: Sept. 8

Tempe Police reported the following incidents on Wednesday:

  • A 21-year-old transient man was arrested Friday on suspicion of disorderly conduct, fighting and an outstanding warrant outside of Gus’ New York Pizza at the 900 block of East University Drive, according to a police report. The fight started when another man at the restaurant challenged the man, and the brawl involved four to five other subjects, according to the report. The fight was directly in front of the restaurant and drew a large crowd into the parking lot of the complex, creating traffic for incoming vehicles, police reported. Police used pepper spray on fighters who would not respond to demands of stopping, according to the report. Police arrested the man after a record check confirmed an outstanding warrant for the man’s arrest, according to the report. The man was transported and booked to see a judge at the Tempe City Jail, police reported.
  • A 42-year-old man was arrested Friday on suspicion of aggravated assault of a police officer, according to a police report. Police arrived at a Circle K convenience store on Scottsdale Road and Continental Drive after receiving calls about a bloody man, police reported. When police arrived the man was found with a deep laceration on his right arm and was heavily intoxicated, according to the report. Police notified medical personnel who arrived at the location to aid the man, according to the report. The man told medical personnel that he had been in a bar fight but refused to make a report about it and go to the hospital, police reported. Medical personnel notified the on-call doctor at Scottsdale Healthcare Hospital and the doctor ordered them to bring the man in for immediate treatment because of his severe injuries and intoxication, according to the report. An officer attempted to speak to the man while on the gurney but the man became irate with the officer, police reported. The officer attempted to detain the man but the man was able to grab the officer’s lapel microphone for his police radio, according to the report. The man disabled the officer’s microphone, making it impossible to call for additional help, police reported. The officer was finally able to detain the man on the gurney but the man made comments to a few firefighters and EMTs on site and said he was going to shoot and stab them, according to the report. When the man arrived at the hospital he continued to threaten hospital personnel and severely pinched a nurse’s hand, police reported. The investigation later revealed the man acquired the injury on his arm after attempting to enter a fenced residential yard and impaling his arm on top of the twisted iron fence, according to the report. The man was booked into Tempe City jail to see a judge after being released from Scottsdale Healthcare, police reported.
