Preliminary enrollment numbers breaks several records

ASU reached a record enrollment of 72,250 undergraduate and graduate students with nearly 9,300 first-time freshmen and 6,800 transfer students, according to preliminary numbers released by the University on Thursday.

Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Kent Hopkins said this tops last fall’s 21st day enrollment numbers by 1,800 students and more than 4,200 students in fall 2009. Hopkins said this is because of ASU’s increasing emphasis on growing a variety of programs.

“High standard of academics is the cornerstone of maintaining an academic institution,” Hopkins said.

Out-of-state and international undergraduate students numbers also hit record levels of nearly 14,700 students. Of that total, 3,300 are new freshmen and 2,000 new transfer students, Hopkins said.

Thirty-five percent of the freshman class is from another state of country, up two percent from last year, Hopkins said.

The academic standard of the 2011 freshman class has also improved.

The mean grade point average is 3.41 with an ACT composite of 23.9 and SAT composite of 1107, according to a University press release.

Hopkins also confirmed there are 13,850 graduate students this fall, consistent with the last two years of enrollment.

Barrett, the Honors College has also welcomed its largest freshmen class in its history: approximately 1,000 students.

Keith Southergill, director of admissions for Barrett, the Honors College said this is because the increase in visibility.

“Barrett has gotten lots of recognition. High achieving students and their parents are starting to see Barrett as a viable and excellent option,” Southergill said.

Last year, Barrett had 872 students across all four campuses, Southergill said.

“Traditionally, Barrett is about six percent of the entire ASU population,” Southergill said. “As ASU is trying to grow, we are too. We are trying to grow to (be) about 10 percent of the ASU population.”
