USG committee talks Stafford cuts, pedestrian safety campaign

The University Affairs Committee, a subdivision of the Tempe campus Undergraduate Student Government, met Tuesday night to discuss proposals it will collectively be presenting before the USG Senate next Tuesday.

Topics discussed by the committee ranged from dealing with the Stafford Loan cuts to the campus-wide Walk Your Wheels campaign.

In response to the recent elimination of funding for the Stafford Direct Loans by the federal government, UAC is drafting a petition requesting ASU President Michael Crow write a letter to the secretary of education on behalf of the ASU student population.

“We students don’t want to lose (the Stafford Loan and Pell Grant) programs that help thousands of ASU students go to college,” said sustainability junior Songling Du, the vice chair of UAC.

In an effort to expand upon Walk Your Wheels, a campaign started by USG in order to encourage students to dismount their bicycles and skateboards in crowded areas, UAC is proposing the creation of a “no ride zone” in high traffic areas.

“I’m very excited about (the no ride zone proposal) because I’ve witnessed a few accidents happen right in front of me and it’s for student safety,” UAC member and computer science senior Kaled Alhanafi said.  “The proposal is still in discussion though, so we’re not sure if (the no ride zones) are going to be the end result.”

The UAC will also be presenting a proposal before the USG Senate for a weekly senate table to be set up on campus where students will be able to talk directly with their representatives to ask questions and voice their concerns over a variety of issues. Should the proposal pass in the senate, there will be surveys available for students at the table where they can weigh in on everything from extending library and dining hall hours during finals week to having more microwaves installed at the Memorial Union.

Additional topics discussed were installing purifiers in drinking fountains and a resolution aimed at combating Michelle Bachmann’s suggestion for the elimination of the Department of Education.
