WHAT ABOUT FREE SPEECH RIGHTS?

(In response to Emilie Eaton’s Oct. 10 column, “Guns on campus isn’t ‘automatic.’”)

Let me make one thing clear — I support the right to free speech. I believe that it is every citizen’s right to have an opinion.

But allowing unbridled free speech on campuses is not a sound decision. It turns a safe learning environment into hostile unfriendly setting. To think that college students are of an age to express their thoughts is foolish.

Instead of allowing free speech on campus and creating the potential of a “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” incident, legislators should introduce bills that build the requirements for speaking responsibly in the first place.

Many citizens argue that this is an infringement of their First Amendment rights, but in reality, it isn’t. Citizens are still allowed to have opposing views, as long as they aren’t expressed in a way that offends others.

Do you have a concern about something on campus? Perhaps you think President Barack Obama is a tax-and-spend liberal or maybe you think GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is a right-wing nut-job. Maybe you think it would be cool to see your name in print. (We can attest that it’s pretty rad.) If any of these apply to you or if you want to help your local student daily out, write a letter to the editor. Send letters to letters.editor@asu.edu, and they should be no longer than 250 words. Please put “Letter to Editor” in the subject line. We look forward to hearing from you.
