PROTESTS ARE WARRANTED
(In response to Will Munsil’s Oct. 5 column, “‘Occupy Wall Street’ is a temper tantrum.”)
Comparing one form of evil to another does not detract from either.
The evil carried out in the name of religious beliefs in theocracies across the world, and the ruthless oppression suffered by protesters in more violent nations than our own do not make the class warfare being carried out in our country any less despicable.
While we are not suffering the brunt of military responses to our outcries, the issues addressed are just as worthy of a cause.
To say our nation simply whines about its economic future is an egregious simplification of our current economic status.
We see the jobless and frustrated mass gathered in the street trying to make a difference because our government no longer represents our interests first, their allegiances lie with the corporations who line their pockets and secure their re-elections.
Now considered people under the law furthering their grip on our Congress and representative government.
The banking system of this nation once deregulated ran afoul with greed and left a select few filthy rich and the nation’s economy in shambles.
Such behavior is rewarded by government bailouts and the money for such corporate aide falls to the middle and lower classes as the super-rich bear next to none of this burden.
Tell me if you think we as a nation have no reason to protest and occupy Wall Street, when our banking system was crashed and those responsible walk away rich, unemployment is at a record high and people can barely find jobs.
I believe idle frustration being vented by occupying a street is far from childish.
