PASSENGER RAIL EXCITEMENT

(In response to Shawn Raymundo’s Oct. 13 article, “Phoenix to Tucson rail gathers public input.”)

As an ASU student, I was very excited to read about the possibility of passenger rail connecting Phoenix and Tucson.

I am a frequent visitor to the UA, and I have many friends whose homes are based in Tempe or Phoenix that travel back and forth as well.

I do not own a car, so this makes traveling difficult. However, if a fast, easy and safe system of public transportation between Phoenix and Tucson were available, I would ride it and I think a lot of other college students would, too.

I bought the ASU transit pass and ride the light rail frequently, which has shown me how convenient public transportation can be.

Plus, students would save money they otherwise would have been spending on gas.

Having a passenger rail would reduce traffic congestion on the I-10, improve air quality by lessening fuel emissions from cars, and students would no longer have to mooch off people for rides.

Ultimately, I think a Phoenix-Tucson passenger train would benefit college students from both universities and prove to be very successful.

Did the Occupy Phoenix protests make you furious? Perhaps you think Michele Bachmann will go all the way to the Oval Office. Or maybe you had an iPhone stolen on campus and want to speak out.

If you want to speak out about any of these things or even anything else, write a letter to the editor of The State Press.

Letters should be 250 words of less, and should contain your affiliation to the University (e.g. undergraduate, graduate student, etc.). Click here to subscribe to the daily State Press newsletter.
