Police Beat: Oct. 3

ASU Police reported the following incidents Friday:

  • An 18-year-old woman allegedly received prank calls on her cell phone Tuesday while at ASU Hassayampa Phase 2 dormitories, according to a police report. The woman notified ASU Police after an unknown person with a blocked phone number called her cell phone at 3 a.m., police reported.

The woman told police the unknown person had been calling her every other day since the beginning of the school year and would usually call three to five times a night and then hang up, according to the report.

The woman said she told the person she “was going to find out who you are” but the person laughed and then hung up, police reported.

The woman said she couldn’t tell if it was a male or female voice and the person’s voice didn’t sound familiar, according to the report.

Police asked the woman if she had given her number to anyone recently and she said that she had given her number to a man because he told her he was an entertainment scout and could find her a job as a model, police reported.

The man had repeatedly called and texted the woman, she said, so she told the man to stop and since then she had been receiving the early morning phone calls from a blocked number, according to the report.

Police instructed the woman to call and find out if her cell phone provider can track the unknown number through their resources, police reported.

  • An unknown man and woman are suspected of identity theft at an Arizona State Credit Union at the 4000 block of West University Way on Tuesday, according to a police report. An ASU Police officer responded to the forgery investigation at the bank after the couple fled the scene in a burgundy or red Ford Expedition heading northbound toward 49th Avenue, according to the report.

The officer searched for the vehicle in the area but was unsuccessful, police reported.

The officer arrived at the bank and spoke to the branch manager who said the couple attempted to withdraw $800 from a previously closed account at a drive-thru teller because the account owner reported a stolen purse earlier that morning, according to the report.

The couple submitted a Member Transaction Voucher with the victim’s name along with the victim’s driver’s license and Social Security card in the pneumatic tube capsule, police reported.

The teller who assisted the couple asked if the account holder was in the vehicle and the female suspect motioned that she was the account holder, according to the report.

The teller knew the account holder and victim personally, and told the couple the woman was not who she claimed to be, police reported.

The teller notified the branch manager and called the police as the couple began to drive away and was also able to get a partial Arizona license plate number, according to the report.

The bank notified the victim that her driver’s license and Social Security card were in their possession and to come and pick them up, police reported.

Police are working with video surveillance footage from the bank to catch the couple and the bank manager said she and the Arizona State Credit Union are willing to aid in prosecution, police reported.
