Portable toilets lit on fire at West campus

Two portable toilets on the West campus were set on fire Monday evening by an unknown person.

According to an ASU Police report, officer Rebecca Garcia responded to a call reporting a possible brush or car fire on 51st Avenue, just north of Sweetwater Avenue.

As Garcia approached a pile of melted debris, the only items recognizable were two metal doorframes. A fire captain already on the scene confirmed the debris was the remains of two portable toilets.

According to the report, the fire captain told Garcia the flames shot higher when fire fighters tried to douse the portable toilers with water. The fire captain said it was possible that a flammable liquid was used to start the fire, because a portable toilet would not burn at a melting temperature without one.

Garcia drove around campus in search of other portable toilets, so she could identify the name of the company —Elite Waste Services. The company had supplied ASU with the portable toilets for an event held the previous weekend, according to the report.

Elite Waste Services will aid in prosecution and the estimated damage was $1,350, according to the report.

There are no suspects or leads at this time.
