The Sun Devils compete in the ITA Regional Championships in San Diego, Calif. starting Thursday.

Tennis coach Sheila McInerney said practices have been going well and the team is excited to win.

“We’ve got a test this week,” McInerney said.

Last year at this tournament Jacqueline Cako made her debut as a freshman, making it to the quarterfinals and losing in three sets.

Cako will miss this year due to playing in the USTA South Carolina Championships.

The team has had a break from competing, which allowed them to prepare deliberately, McInerney said.

This tournament offers a chance for the Sun Devils to compete against other excellent teams and get real results.

“The competition is going to be good,” McInerney said. “It’s a high caliber tournament.”

Freshman Leighann Sahagun and junior Nicole Smith were injured earlier this year but will be playing doubles.

The team’s goal for this tournament is to reduce unforced errors, McInerney said.

“We’re going to focus on things we can control,” McInerney said.

After weeks of practicing the Sun Devils are looking forward to a challenge.

“They’ve been playing better and feel well prepared,” McInerney said.
