Garth Gerhart selected to Senior Bowl

On Jan. 28, ASU senior offensive lineman Garth Gerhart will do something his older brother, former Stanford and current Minnesota Vikings running back Toby Gerhart, never did.

The ASU football team’s captain accepted an invitation Wednesday to play in the 2012 Senior Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala., in preparation for the NFL draft.

Toby received an invite to the bowl, but didn’t participate.

Gerhart, a 2011 Second Team All-Pac-12 honoree, started a total of 35 games as a Sun Devil.

“He’s done all that,” former ASU coach Dennis Erickson said last season. “He’s been the leader of our front. He doesn’t say a lot.  He’s just a football player and a guy that knows the game. I just thank God we’ve had him all of this time.”

This season, among other accomplishments, Gerhart suffered a severely sprained ankle against Oregon State but came back the very next week to start at Utah.

“He’s the guy that runs the whole front,” Erickson said. “To me, he’s an all-conference center. He makes all of the line calls. He has to be smart besides being a good athlete.”
