WHERE WERE ALL THE GOOD SONGS BACK THEN?

(In response to Jake Adler’s Jan. 26 column, "Where have all the good songs gone?”)

You know, I can't help but wonder if Jake Adler refuses to see anything but the worst in today's music. While it was said that today's tunes all sounds the same and are only about partying, I have to wonder how meaningful "we all live in a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine," really is. And I fully recognize the contribution to modern music The Beatles made.

Songs like "Party Rock Anthem" may be smash hits, but the top-selling album of 2011 was Adele's “21,” which was all about relationships and healing after a breakup.  Music by Florence + The Machine, who made it into Billboard's list of the Top Artists of 2011, is about the loss of self to emotions, using metaphors of science and of water and off-beat melodies created by choirs, bands and orchestras.

The Who has a song about being famous, and another about baked beans.

Where were all the good songs back then?
