Police Beat: Jan. 17

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Friday:

  •  A 19-year-old Phoenix woman was arrested Wednesday morning at the 2100 block of East Orange Street on suspicion of narcotic drug possession, according to a police report.

When Tempe Police arrived at Escalante Park they told the woman and her two friends the park closed at midnight and they were allegedly trespassing, police reported.

When police questioned the woman she admitted to using methamphetamines in the past but said she no longer used the drug, according to the report.

The officers then requested to search the woman’s purse, she agreed, and during the search police found a white pill that read “Watson” and “932,” police reported.

The pill was later identified as the prescription drug oxycodone, but the woman told police she had gotten the purse from a friend a couple months before and was unaware the pill was inside, according to the report.

The woman was arrested, transported and booked into Tempe City Jail. She was released pending drug charges, police reported.

  • A 20-year-old Phoenix man and a 19-year-old Phoenix man were arrested Jan. 10 at the 4900 block of South Wendler Drive on suspicion of third degree burglary and possession of burglary tools, according to a police report.

A Tempe Police officer noticed two men in a yellow Pontiac Aztek enter the parking lot of a Motel 6 and then saw them exit the lot about 20 minutes later, police reported.

The officer pulled the men over for a traffic violation and during questioning, the officer noticed a catalytic converter — used in vehicles to convert toxic emissions to less harmful ones — lying on the back seat of the vehicle and black soot present on the 20-year-old man’s clothing and fingernails, according to the report.

During the investigation, police discovered the converter belonged to a Toyota Tacoma parked at the Motel 6, but the two men denied taking it and could not give a plausible reason for being at the motel, police reported.

After the two men invoked their rights to counsel, police searched the vehicle and found two sets of ratchets and wrenches, according to the report. The men were arrested, transported and booked into Tempe City Jail, police reported.
