Playing with confidence from victories over UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara, the ASU tennis team is prepared to meet Texas Tech.

“After a weekend with a lot of matches, the team has a good idea of what they need to work on,” coach Sheila McInerney said. “Every person has different aspects of the game they need to work on.”

On Saturday, Jan. 28, ASU will play Texas Tech and Sacramento State will play USC at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

The next day, the two losing teams will play each other and the two winning teams will do the same.

McInerney said the team is only focusing on themselves and not paying attention toward the other teams.

“Texas (Tech) is a really good team,” she said. “We need to play well in every match to come out on top.”

Two possible obstructions to the Sun Devils’ success are the minor injuries sustained by two players. A wrist injury prevented freshman Leighann Sahagun from playing last weekend and a slight knee problem has hampered senior Michelle Brycki.

McInerney said the MRI came back without any problems, so Brycki will focus on staying healthy.

“We have to be really smart with how we play if these injuries persist,” McInerney said.

Despite the Sun Devils’ success last weekend, McInerney said they won’t forget that the season has only just started.

“The first couple of matches, people are concerned about winning, but we need to think long term,” McInerney said. “The goal is to make improvements and utilize them in match situations.”
