MEN DESERVE RIGHTS, TOO
(In response to Isabelle Novak’s Oct. 27 column, “Complaining for our rights.”)
Since you seem to be so brainwashed in your women’s studies classes you seem to forget all the advantages you as a woman enjoy. First, you seem to forget that as a woman you have the right to an abortion, to place the child up for adoption, give the child back to the hospital or give the child to your own mother to raise. Men on the other hand must accept fatherhood against his will and be attached to the state in the money transfer system called child support. Women, in this tight job market, will have advantages over men in finding stable employment and in career advancement with affirmative action laws. Let’s not forget that women outnumber men in higher education 40 percent to 60 percent nationwide, but receive the lion’s share of financial aid. Divorce courts and laws that take men’s children and money is another travesty that I can write a book about. When we discuss domestic violence, for which I am a male victim, men are left out of the equation and discussion altogether.
So please don’t belittle men for seeking the same rights women demanded in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Since women have the power in society, it’s so easy to overlook the “second” gender in society. As men’s groups grown in influence and determination, maybe one day you look back to how foolish your article was and how you have belittled men’s rights issues. I would like to add one more point in closing, since you say that you have “Women’s Studies Classes” where are all the “Men’s Studies Classes”? Too bad you are so oppressed…
