Though not quite at 100 percent, junior guard Trent Lockett’s injured right ankle continues to progress weekly.

However, coach Herb Sendek, isn’t sure Lockett will see his normal explosiveness return this season.

Lockett participated in most half-court segments and some five-on-five runs Monday during practice, but remains unable to participate in full-court segments.

“We have to be careful and make sure we keep a good pulse on how he feels,” Sendek said.

Lockett sprained his ankle against Oregon State Jan. 14 and missed six games thereafter. He returned to practice Feb. 6 but was limited in his participation.

Lockett managed to log over 30 minutes in his first two games back last week. He had 12 points and six rebounds in 36 minutes in the win over Utah on Thursday. Lockett scored 10 points in 32 minutes in the loss to Colorado on Saturday.

“I’m pretty happy with the way it held up,” Lockett said. “It’s obviously still swollen and sore, but this time this week is a lot better than it was this time last week.”

He went 5-of-12 from the field in both games and shot 56 percent from the free throw line. Lockett said he had a difficult time getting past defenders with the ball in his hand late in the shot clock.

“I’ve still got to learn how to play without a good first step and explosiveness because, at the end of the day, I’m not always going to have that,” Lockett said. “It’s a good learning process.”

Road Woes

This week will mark the last regular season road trip for the ASU men’s basketball team. Surely, the Sun Devils have to be relieved.

They’ll make the trip to the Pacific Northwest this week to face Washington and Washington State. The Sun Devils are 2-6 on the road this season.

ASU is outscored by nearly 13 points away from Wells Fargo Arena. Opponents shoot 46 percent from the field and nearly 40 percent from 3-point range.

Its only wins on the road came against Tulsa, 67–64 on Dec. 3 and USC, 62–53  on Jan. 5.

“That hasn't always been the case,” Sendek said. “We've traditionally been a pretty good road team. Right now, I don't think it’s as much a function of where we play but it’s how we play.

“I also don't think it’s as much of a function of who we play as what we do. Our focus has to be internally. It’s not about the opponent, it’s about us. It’s not about the site, it’s about us."

Keala King Update

The Arizona Republic reports former ASU sophomore guard Keala King has joined the Long Beach State basketball team. King averaged 13.7 points in 13 starts before he was suspended prior to the team’s two-game road trip against Southern California and UCLA. He was dismissed from the program when the team returned home Jan. 8.
