Police arrest Tempe High School instructor for sexual misconduct

Tempe Police arrested 22-year-old Andrew Islas late Monday night on suspicion of sexual involvement with a 16-year-old Tempe High School student.

Islas is an assistant band instructor at the school, and he and the student are believed to have known each other for more than a year before entering into a relationship, Tempe Police Lt. Mike Horn said.

The two started their relationship in August 2011, when she was only 15 at the time, and continued until November, Horn said.

An employee of the school found out about the relationship Monday and told administration before they notified Tempe Police, according to a Tempe Police press release.

Police believe this relationship is an isolated incident, but investigators are still talking to parents of the band students to verify this is the only case, Horn said.

Horn said both Islas and the girl admitted to having a relationship and spent time together at the school, his home in Chandler, her parents’ home while they were away and at various city parks.

The man was arrested on suspicion of six counts of sexual misconduct with a minor.
