Sprinters lead track and field at NAU Open

The ASU men's sprint team performed superbly at the NAU Open, leading the Sun Devils’ indoor track and field team to a total of nine event wins.

In Rashad Ross’ second career race, the senior won the 200-meter in 21.15 seconds. Ross, a member of the football team, did not start practicing with the track team until the conclusion of the football season.

Coach Greg Kraft is confident Ross will become a key member of the team for the rest of the season.

“You have no idea how nice it is to have a surprise like Ross,” Kraft said. “We have a team that could contend for the Pac-12 championship, and he could be the piece that gets us over the hump. I thank coach Todd Graham for allowing Rashad to come out and run for us.”

Sophomore Ryan Milus won the 60-meters with a time of 6.64 seconds. Milus’ second win in three races was impressive, but Kraft wants to see the same production in bigger races.

“He has to execute in the big meets, and that is the next thing for him,” Kraft said.

Senior Daniel Auberry finished right behind Milus in the 60-meter dash, finishing in 6.67 seconds, a career best for the junior college transfer.

“He's just starting to scratch the surface,” Kraft said. “He's very talented, and the performances he has had up to this point aren’t surprising. He has a chance to put himself in the race for the national championships.”

Sophomore jumper Bryan McBride won the high and long jump competitions, notching his highest career jump at 2.21 meters.

“He left his best jumps out there,” Kraft said. “We have been working on some technical things, and he was still unable to execute them, but he's getting closer.”

On the women's side, there were sweeps in the long jump, 200-meters and 60-meters. However, Kraft is still looking for more from the whole team.

“We are making progress, but we aren't at the elite level,” Kraft said. “The girls we have keep getting better and thankfully are very coachable.”

One of the women Kraft is looking to see more out of is junior Christabel Nettey. An All-American, Nettey is coming off an injury in the fall.

She is slowly making progress, but the team needs her. Nettey won the long jump with a leap of 6.08 meters and also won the 60-meter event.

“She has kind of been lost in the shuffle because of her injury,” Kraft said. “Hopefully we can get her physically right. We desperately need her to be healthy.”

This upcoming weekend will be the first time the Sun Devils will split up, as they will be sending athletes to the Husky Invitational, Boise State Team Challenge and Don Kirby Elite Invitational.

“This next weekend will be the first time we bring our whole team out,” Kraft said. “We will know where we stand nationally after this week.”
