Bravo to generosity and activism at ASU. Students traveled barefoot Tuesday as part of TOMS Shoes’ “One Day Without Shoes” movement. Participators donated a pair of shoes while raising awareness for the “One for One” cause, where TOMS donates a pair of shoes to a child for every pair of shoes purchased. As a following act, a group of ASU students started a company that applies the same “one for one” idea to bamboo bikes. For every bamboo bike purchased, the company sends a hand-cycle made of bamboo to someone using a wheelchair in Africa. This is no slacktivism. Nicely done ASU students.
Boo to low voter turnout for the Undergraduate Student Government election in Tempe. Participation in the election decreased by almost 75 percent from last year, which saw 3351 voters. Three years ago, the elections saw anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000 voters. On the other hand, this year’s GPSA elections increased more than 500 percent from last year.
Bravo to the newest Tumblr craze, Texts From Hillary. The Tumblr posts memes of Hillary Clinton on a military airplane, wearing big sunglasses, checking her BlackBerry and looking like a boss. After 32 posts and more than 45,000 Tumblr followers, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton herself submitted a version of the meme. Thanks for the LOLZ, Hillz.
Boo to the discrepancy in severity of the sanctions given to Baylor’s basketball programs and the ASU baseball program. Baylor will serve a three-year probation for excessive and impermissible contact made to recruits, while the Sun Devils, whose situation is similar, were hit with a postseason ban in addition to a probationary period. The NCAA needs to make up its mind.
