In an effort to raise money for homeless youth, Gamma Rho Lambda, an all-inclusive social sorority that promotes tolerance, will host its fourth annual Kingdom Come Drag Show on Thursday at Sky Lounge on First and Washington streets near the Downtown campus.

Tickets are $7, and all proceeds will benefit the Greenhouse Project, a transitional housing program for homeless LGBTQ youth offered by Phoenix nonprofit group Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development.

Gamma Rho Lambda member and psychology and sociology senior Abie Feuerstein said this is her third year participating in the event and it is her favorite event of the year.

“It’s really cool because last year we went beyond anything we imagined and raised over $1,000,” she said.  “To try to be able to do that further would be amazing. It’s for a great cause.”

Gamma Rho Lambda President and political science junior Jesse Jordan said the Greenhouse Project is a program that is near and dear to sorority members’ hearts.

“It’s usually a different type of involvement,” Jordan said. “We put on a drag show because we are technically a sorority that identifies with the LGBT community … and LGBT (youths) have a high rate of being homeless and getting kicked out of their homes.”

Jordon said the sorority expects 150 to 200 people to attend.

“It’s usually a pretty big success,” Jordan said.

Gamma Rho Lambda spokesperson and English freshman Tory Tennyson said the show features drag queens and kings performing dances and songs.

“I know two of our sisters are doing a number together,” she said. “It’s going to be big.”

Tennyson said the sorority had originally planned to fundraise for a different charity, but chose Tumbleweed because of its message.

“We have an opportunity to bring attention to a good cause that some people might not necessarily know about,” she said.

Feuerstein said the sorority chose to fundraise for the Greenhouse Project because those who would benefit from the program are often about the same age as Gamma Rho Lambda sorority members.

“It’s very close to our hearts to know people who might be struggling in that kind of sense,” she said. “To be able to make an impact in that way is really meaningful for us.”
