Chris Benard may have earned himself back-to-back Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Week awards.
The senior jumper set the school record in the triple jump Saturday, soaring 16.74 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays to surpass Deon Mayfield's 30-year school record in the event.
The mark was good enough to qualify Benard for the Olympic trials in June and surpass Florida’s Omar Craddock for the longest jump in the nation.
Redshirt junior Jordan Clarke set a new personal outdoor best in the shot put at 19.77 meters. The throw helped the No. 8 Sun Devil men’s overall score and cemented his national lead in the event.
The Sun Devils’ other star thrower, redshirt sophomore Anna Jelmini, had a good weekend as well.
Jelmini’s discus toss of 59.17 meters is the top throw in the nation so far this season.
Jelmini also launched a throw of 16.77 meters in the shot put to lead the No. 16 Sun Devil women to a very impressive weekend.
Senior Kauren Tarver opened up her steeplechase season this weekend, finishing the 3000-meter run in a record-setting time of 10:23.38.
The mark puts Tarver in sixth place in ASU history.
In women's pole vault, sophomore Shaylah Simpson had the best vault of any collegiate woman, clearing a career-best 4.30 meters.
Senior Lindsay Prescott beat career-best time in the 5000-meter event by 19 seconds, finishing in 16:30.91.
The Sun Devils will continue their season next weekend in Tucson at the annual ASU-UA-NAU Double Dual Meet.
