Track to face elite competition at Mt. SAC Relays

The ASU track and field team will compete in a different landscape this weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

After finishing the home slate last weekend, the Sun Devils will begin the final stretch of the season facing some of the best competition in the world.

Coach Greg Kraft said the team’s focus is still on overall improvement.

“We will send out a lot of athletes,” Kraft said. “We are looking for our women to continue to make progress.”

Senior Kauren Tarver, who ranks No. 8 in ASU history in the 3000-meter steeplechase, will open up her steeplechase season this weekend.

Kraft is curious to see how Tarver and the men's steeplechasers will compete for the first time.

“It's the first time that we open them up, so it will be interesting to see what they have got,” Kraft said.

One of the stronger groups for the No. 8 men's side is the sprints team, but it will not be competing this weekend.

“The men's sprints (team) will have the day off as we get ready for the championship push,” Kraft said.

Most of the No. 16 women's side will run, though, and Kraft hopes this is just another stepping-stone.

“The women are a little younger, so they just need to get more repetitions and learn how to compete,” Kraft said.

The Sun Devils will compete mostly in the open sections of the meet Friday and Saturday at the historic Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
