Bravo to Marvel's “The Avengers” return to theaters Labor Day weekend. The film has already demolished box office records, but we'd be lying if we said that we feel ashamed for contributing more to that total this weekend, mere weeks before the film is released on DVD and BluRay, which is a blatant money making ploy. Regardless, you know you'll be at a theater near you again this weekend, just like the rest of us.
Boo to the possibility of dangerous antimicrobials seeping into the Tempe water supply from hand soaps used in campus bathrooms. Summer research collaborated on by ASU scientists found that these chemicals, which can cause serious health issues, remains in water even after treatment. Washing your hands is supposed to fend off colds, not destroy your endocrine system.
Bravo to global studies sophomore Kamra Hakim for her summer internship in South Africa and Zambia with Chegg for Good and nonprofit organization ONE. Not only was Hakim one of eight students selected from a pool of 2,000 to participate in the internship, but also she was one of the younger applicants. Hakim brought a wealth of knowledge back to ASU regarding the importance of foreign aid as well as an understanding of life in Africa.
Boo to Mill Avenue street performers no longer being allowed to amp up their music without a special event permit. Not always the most talented folk, street performers lend a unique vibe to the area and make for a pleasant break from the pop-lock-and-drop-it beats that bump all night anyway.
Bravo to MTV for canceling “Jersey Shore.” The days of “fist pumping” and “GTL” (gym, tanning and laundry) are over. It’s a promising sign that mankind will stop promoting people who mindlessly party for a living. If only we can get MTV to start broadcasting music again, as advertised in its namesake.
