Soccer held scoreless in two opening losses

The ASU women's soccer team opened up its 2012 season last weekend in southern California and left with two shutout losses.

In the season opener Friday night, the Sun Devils (0-2-0) fell to Cal State, Northridge 1-0 despite outshooting the Matadors 21-10.

The Matadors (2-0-0) scored their goal in the 10th minute off a counterattack after a Sun Devil corner kick.

CSUN senior midfielder Stephanie Galarze chipped Sun Devil redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chandler Morris after the ball was crossed in by freshman forward Lyndsey Preston for the goal.

Senior goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo made five saves for the Matadors, including a nice stop midway through the second half on a Sun Devil equalizing attempt, to record her 17th career shutout.

The game was CSUN's first win over a Pac-12 school since 1999 and their first season-opening win since 2008.

The Sun Devils then traveled a couple of hours south to face San Diego State in a Sunday afternoon matinee, but they lost 2-0 to the Aztecs.

The Sun Devils were outplayed nearly the entire game. The Aztecs broke through in the 47th minute on a goal from six yards out by sophomore forward/midfielder Kelsey Booth.

The Aztecs (2-0-1) struck again just seven minutes later as sophomore forward Haley Locker took a pass from senior forward/midfielder Sarah Halverson and slotted it near-post for the goal.

Aztecs redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Boaz stopped all six Sun Devil shot attempts for her second straight shutout to open the season as SDSU improved to 2-0, while the Sun Devils fell to 0-2.

This is the first time since 2008 that ASU has lost any of its first two non-conference season games, and the Sun Devils finished 8-8-4 and missed the NCAA Tournament that year.

The Sun Devils resume action this Friday on the road against NAU in Flagstaff.
