Not even a record crowd of 2,207 fans at Lumberjack Stadium could stop the Sun Devil offense Friday night, as the ASU women's soccer team left Flagstaff with a 4-0 win over NAU.
The result was the Sun Devils’ (1-2-0) first victory of the season and coach Kevin Boyd liked the effort his team put forth.
“It was nice to go out and show that not only can we win games, but that we can shut teams out as well,” Boyd said.
Junior forward Devin Marshall led the way for the Sun Devils, scoring the first two goals of the game.
Her first goal, also the first goal of the year for the Devils, came off a corner in the 16thminute crossed in by senior forward/midfielder Courtney Tinnin.
Marshall's second goal came less than two minutes after halftime after grabbing her rebound on a breakaway.
The performance tied Marshall's career-high in goals scored in a single game and Boyd is excited to continue watching Marshall's progress this season.
“We have been waiting for Devin Marshall to emerge as this type of goal scorer,” Boyd said. “For her to get a couple and start giving her confidence, I couldn't be happier for her. I think it's just the start of things to come forth for her.”
Freshman forward Cali Farquharson scored the other two goals for the Sun Devils.
Farquharson led the Sun Devils with nine shots, but didn't score until the 84th minute off a pass from senior midfielder Taylor McCarter, which Farquharson slotted in the bottom right corner for her first career college goal.
Farquharson scored again in the 88th minute on a breakaway and Boyd is already impressed with the confidence the freshman has shown so far.
“Once Cali found the net, she found it on her next chance as well so it's great confidence for her as a freshman,” Boyd said.
The Sun Devils outshot the Lumberjacks (0-3-0) 30-9. Freshman goalie Chandler Morris made only four saves for the Sun Devils, but she had a crucial stop before Farquharson's first goal preserved the Sun Devil lead.
The Sun Devils now travel to the Midwest to finish off their five-game road trip against Missouri on Friday and Kansas on Sunday.
