ASU network down after power failure

Correction: A previous version of this article  misattributed information regarding how students can get information about their class assignments.

A power failure at an ASU data center caused a major server outage Thursday morning, making crucial MyASU services unavailable.

As of 4:10 p.m., myASU services became available to students. Work is ongoing on other systems, including the main ASU website and computer network services.

Blackboard and eCollege became available as of 2 p.m., but some students may still be having trouble accessing both sites, according to ASU Outages Twitter page.

Students were unable to access online classes, submit assignments and check grades after Blackboard and eCollege went down around 8 a.m.

ASU spokeswoman Julie Newberg said University officials will meet in response to the server failure to develop measures to prevent another outage from occurring.

ASU spokeswoman Natasha Karaczan said students who are concerned about how the outage impacted assignments or tests due through Blackboard can contact Vice Provost Fred Corey.

There is no information yet about the specific cause of the power failure in the data center, and the University Technology Office has been working all morning to restore access, Newberg said.

The ASU System Health team first reported network connectivity and power failure issues on Twitter at 6:51 a.m.

The PeopleSoft upgrade to ASU server systems last week had absolutely nothing to do with Thursday’s server failure, Newberg said.
