Freshman forward Cali Farquharson picked a good day to record her first career hat trick, as the ASU women's soccer team needed all of her goals to knock off USC 5-4 in double overtime.
Farquharson led off the ASU (5-5-1, 1-1 Pac-12) scoring in the 27th minute, slotting the ball in the top right corner from 10 yards away for her fourth goal of the season.
The freshman added her second goal of the game with just a minute to go in the first half, tapping the ball into the lower left corner to give the Sun Devils a 2-1 halftime lead.
Farquharson completed the hat trick, the Sun Devils' first since Karin Volpe in 2010, in the 87th minute after taking a pass from senior midfielder Taylor McCarter and scoring on a breakaway.
“I'm just glad I was finally able to get some goals, but I couldn't have done it without the beautiful (passes) from my teammates,” Farquharson said.
Coach Kevin Boyd was thrilled with Farquharson's performance, especially with junior forward Devin Marshall out on account of a knee injury.
“What a great day for her to get her hat trick and for her to come alive like she did,” Boyd said. “I've felt like it was coming.”
Senior midfielder Courtney Tinnin put the Sun Devils up 3-1 and seemingly in control after blasting a long shot in the top right corner past Trojan sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Stanley with 30 minutes to play.
The Trojans (4-5-1,1-1 Pac-12) clawed back though, tying the game with goals in the 70th and 83rd minutes.
Farquharson's third goal gave the Sun Devils the lead back 4-3 with only three minutes to go, but they couldn't hold it.
USC junior defender Autumn Altamirano scored a controversial goal with only a minute to go to send the game into overtime, netting the ball far post behind ASU freshman goalkeeper Chandler Morris.
“It looked like a handball and offsides,” Boyd said. “Until I get the video, I'm not going to second guess the line judge.”
Tensions in the match arose in overtime when Trojans senior forward Samantha Johnson brought down McCarter from behind then made contact with her face to give the Trojans their second red card in three minutes.
“Taylor had her beat and the girl just grabbed her and tried to throw her,” Boyd said. “That late in the game when someone tries to do that maliciously, it's frustrating and makes you angry.”
The Sun Devils, who outshot the Trojans 35-14, played the rest of the match up two players, and Boyd knew the Sun Devils had to come out with a victory.
“We weren't playing for the tie,” Boyd said.
The Sun Devils scored the game-winner only 40 seconds into the second period of overtime when freshman midfielder Tommi Goodman put away a Farquharson rebound for her first career goal.
“We needed that goal,” Goodman said. “We had so much room and they weren't coming at us and it would have been upsetting to come out with a tie so I'm glad we got that goal.”
