Letter: Compassion missing on elevators

I have noticed in the elevators at ASU, that if a person takes the elevator (instead of stairs) to go between two floors only, people in the elevator will make snide remarks about them when they get off. Please be aware that you can't tell by looking at them if someone is in pain, or has an injury, or a chronic illness, or is just plain exhausted. You don't know why they are taking the elevator, but rude comments about them can be hurtful, not only to them, but also to other disabled people who overhear and to our entire campus by fostering an environment of ableism.

Please remember that not all disabilities or pains are visible and have compassion, not contempt, for your fellows!
