The ASU soccer team couldn't hang with defending national champion Stanford in the second half, Sunday afternoon, as it fell 3-0 to the Cardinal, which extended its home winning streak to 59.

The Sun Devils (4-5-1, 0-1) outplayed No. 3 Stanford (7-1-1, 1-0) in the first half, outshooting the Cardinal 6-5, but gave up three goals in the second half to secure a Cardinal victory.

Stanford Junior forward Natalie Griffen scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 56th minute, taking a feed from sophomore forward Chioma Ubogagu and slotting it in the far post behind Sun Devil goalkeeper redshirt freshman Chandler Morris to put the Cardinal up a point.

The Cardinal scored again just seven minutes later when junior Stanford forward Courtney Verloo tallied her third goal of the season on a penalty kick to extend the Cardinal lead to two.

Junior midfielder Taylor McCann completed the scoring for the Cardinal in the 84th minute, scoring a rebound off a breakaway by Griffen for her first goal of the season.

Sun Devil head coach Kevin Boyd was unhappy with the Sun Devils’ second-half play, who were outshot 14-2.

“I thought we were two different teams during the first and second half,” Boyd said. “I don't know why but we came out completely different in the second half and we were just sitting back and letting them come at us.”

ASU senior midfielder Courtney Tinnin was also disappointed with the Sun Devils' second half play.

“We weren't winning first and second balls. I feel like we came out a whole different team second half and unfortunately it didn't go in our favor,” Tinnin said.

Junior forward Devin Marshall, who led the team with three shots, almost put the Sun Devils up a goal late in the first half, but her chip hit the crossbar and rolled out.

Marshall's attempt was the Sun Devils' best of the game as Stanford junior goalkeepers Aly Gleason and Emily Oliver combined for the fifth straight Cardinal shutout.

The Sun Devils return home to open their Pac-12 home slate against USC, and Tinnin knows the Sun Devils need to get back to basics.

“We need to focus on the little things,” Tinnin said. “We need to get back to being a possession-style team and doing the things we know we need to do to be a good team.”
