Letter: Sinema supports students

In response to Hunter Moss’s letter Oct. 31 letter to the editor, “Kyrsten Sinema mocks ASU students.”

I have respect for opinions that differ from my own, but I was disappointed to read a letter to the editor that deliberately misled students about Kyrsten Sinema's character. Hunter Moss alleged that Sinema, who is an ASU teacher and alumni, thinks that ASU students are "stupid" and would not have their backs in Washington. What Moss withheld is the fact that he is affiliated with the political consulting firm that is employed by Sinema's opponent, Vernon Parker.

I will disclose that I, too, am affiliated with this congressional race; I have had the joy and privilege of working for Sinema's campaign for Congress since the primary and founded the “Students for Sinema” group. I can say with confidence that Sinema has the utmost respect for ASU's students and will support them as their representative in Congress.

The fact is, Vernon Parker told the Tea Party that he would support cuts to the Department of Education, which would hurt the Pell Grants and Stafford Loans that many ASU students rely on for their education in addition to the $2 billion in funding that Arizona schools receive. Kyrsten Sinema supports the protection of federal financial aid because, like many of her student supporters, she was a recipient of them when she was in school and could not have earned her ASU degrees without them. Sinema discussed these and other important issues with students at a forum hosted by USG held at ASU's Tempe campus, which Parker declined multiple times to attend.

As a social worker and a state legislator, Sinema fought for the affordability and accessability of education. Kyrsten Sinema is the clear choice for education in the 9th congressional district race and I encourage students to elect her as their representative on Nov. 6. She will have your back.
