The Tempe Undergraduate Student Government was supposed to release its applications for Senate elections early this week, but amendments to the election code have delayed their release. At Tuesday's Senate meeting, USG passed Senate Bill 51, which revised their elections code.
SB 51 was passed by USG West and will be voted on by USG Polytechnic on Wednesday and USG Downtown on Friday. If all four campuses pass the bill, then applications for senate elections will likely be released soon after USG votes on Friday and the election process will be on track.
Also passed were Senate Bill 49 and Senate Bill 50. SB 49 approved approximately $47,000 in funds to various ASU College Councils.
SB 50 designated $10,000 to the ASU Dance Marathon, a fundraising dance on Feb. 15 that will donate its proceeds to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
So far, the event has raised nearly $36,000 for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The funds from USG will be used to pay for staging, lighting and security, USG University Affairs Director Casey Clowes said.
USG President Mark Naufel said he had spoken with ASU President Michael Crow about possible tuition increases and learned that tuition will not increase by more than 3 percent. A tuition increase will be used for faculty pay increases, as ASU faculty have not received pay increases in five years.
Always Get Consent week will occur the week of Feb. 25. The organization will be operating a table on Hayden Lawn on Feb. 27 and will be giving out free pairs of yoga pants. On March 1, students who wear Always Get Consent T-shirts will be able to get discounts on food at participating restaurants on Mill Avenue.
USG is partnering with the Tempe Police Department to put a system into place that will notify ASU when students are guilty of underage drinking or receive noise complaints. The goal of this initiative is to identity which areas or groups are causing trouble at ASU.
