Devil Dish: Why I'm rooting for the (W)indians

I’m a San Francisco Giants fan, through and through. I didn’t give up my dreams of a postseason berth until ESPN, said it was mathematically impossible.

That said, my rooting interest in these playoffs is next to none. To maintain my interest, I have latched on to a certain team just for September and October; a temporary relationship that will terminate when their season does.

This team is the Cleveland Indians, more playfully referred to as the #Windians.

Their surge for the playoffs hasn’t been impressive. In fact, it has been more facilitated by Rangers losses than Indians wins. It hasn’t even been entertaining.

But there’s something about the Indians that attracts me.

Maybe it’s because former ASU standout Jason Kipnis is their second baseman.

It could be because they play in the same division as one of my least favorite teams in baseball, the Detroit Tigers.

Possibly, it’s the prospects of an Indians-Pirates World Series and how Bud Selig and the MLB would hate every minute of it.

Or maybe it’s just the sports fan’s innate bond with the underdog.

Regardless, I’m not going to go splurge on Ryan Raburn merchandise. I don’t even stand by their controversial moniker.

But an innocent postseason crush? I think it’s justified.
